The Hitler Youth RZM knives are a favorite of many. The restoration of these is fun and I have a great time too. Putting natural bone in and also converting Bundeswehr scabbards to compliment HJ knives.
Here are the two side-by-side before and after the conversion.
Step 1-
Remove the leather belt hanger from the scabbard with a utility razor.
Step 2-
Remove the throat screw with a precision screwdriver.
Step 3-
Pull out the throat with a slotted screwdriver. You see in this photo there are two tension springs.
Step 4-
Remove the frog stud with a cold chisel on the edge of an anvil. I held it between my knees while tap a few times with a large hammer until it popped off.
Step 5-
About now I had a snack, tortilla chips, while I sanded the surface by hand with 60 grit using an old flap wheel.
Just break the surface.
Step 6-
Here I still munch my chips while using sanding sponge and finer grit paper to shine.
Step 7-
Take a pliers and bend off the tab on one of the tension springs.
Step 8-
Pop a hole at the top of the tension spring using the tool shown here:
